Ways to Improve Dexterity for Seniors

As we age, it is very common to lose strength, flexibility, and range of motion in various parts of the body. This can be a particularly difficult struggle when it comes to losing dexterity in your hands. However, as a senior living in Lakewood, there are many different ways you can improve the dexterity of your hands. In this article, we will be covering some easy exercises and activities to try so you can help keep your hands and fingers strong as you age.

Mold with Clay

Clay, dough, and putty are all very fun creative and sensory tools that can also be used to help you strengthen your dexterity. If you are using brand new clay, be sure to start out with very small pieces, as new clay can take a little while to soften enough to work with easily. However, when it comes to dough and putty, you can pretty much work with them as soon as you get them. The squeezing and molding movements you will do while handling these mediums can do wonderful things for your manual dexterity as a senior.

Play an Instrument

Playing an instrument is another great way to make sure you are keeping the dexterity in your hands. It can be helpful to play an instrument you know for this purpose, or you can even try learning a new instrument. This can help you not only work out your hands, but also your brain/mental dexterity! In addition to this, music can be a particularly valuable tool for seniors who are in memory care in Lakewood.

Practice Your Penmanship

Handwriting is something that can be a really great workout for your hands’ dexterity. However, rather than just writing as you normally would, try writing in a different way and/or using your non-dominant hand. For example, try writing your name a few times by holding your pencil with just your fingers and not your thumb on both hands. You can also practice different styles of writing, or handwritten “fonts.” You can also just try drawing or doodling in these ways to help strengthen your hand dexterity.

Try Origami

Simple origami pieces can also be a wonderful way to work on your hands’ dexterity. Folding paper and making sure to follow a specific design is also a great way to work on your mental and manual dexterity. However, you do not have to start with the most complicated forms of origami. Start simple, and work your way up as you get better and better! Think of it more as an exercise to improve your life, rather than an activity or skill you have to do perfectly.
